Corney, very near the Irish Sea, is home to a predominantly agricultural community and way of life. In 1890 it would have been much the same. On a clear day it is possible to see the Isle of Man, North Wales, and parts of Scotland from Corney.

Mary Barker was born in 1890. Census records from 1901 reveal the growing Barker family lived in Muncaster, Cumberland, England a short distance from Corney.

In 1911, Mary married William (Willie) Stokes in Yorkshire, England. Willie and Mary had one child during their marriage, a boy named Ernest Leslie born the same year.

Census records and additional research indicate Mary spent her time as a homemaker, presumably taking care of her husband Willie, and son Ernie. There is no record of work outside the home after she married.

Mary died in 1932, at the age of 42 and her husband Willie passed in 1945. Ernie died in 1978 with no record of ever marrying.
